This depends on the individual. Some people go to therapy for a specific problem they wish to resolve, or because they are experiencing a particular symptom they wish to address. Therapy for acute matters will generally last 6-9 months.
For chronic symptoms, conditions, or trauma integration work, the time table is highly varied.
At the end of the day, therapy lasts until you have gained the skills, insight, or regulation needed to feel confident in your own life.

I am not opposed to writing ESA letters, however you must be in treatment for a minimum of three months prior to a letter being written. During this three months, sessions must be attended and participated in fully. These three months do not guarantee a letter; this is the minimum time needed to ascertain that criteria has been met.

All letters can be discussed during treatment. There are some letters for disability that an LMHC is not qualified to submit on your behalf. If you are looking for a letter for gender affirming care, the minimum period to be seen is six months.
